Special Olympics of Kentucky, Lexington Torpedoes (gray uniform) and Jaguars (maroon uniforms). I am an assistant coach for the Torpedoes. This was at the state tournament in Louisville, Kentucky this March, 2017. The Jaguars and Torpedoes went head-to-head, with the Jaguars placing 1st, by just a few points. So proud of both teams!!
My Whitney Young Scholars
Four years ago I was asked to help out with a new program being implemented at Univ. of KY, through the Martin Luther King Center and a non-profit organization called the Lincoln Foundation. The Lincoln Foundation's mission it to serve the academically talented, socioeconomically disadvantaged students between the 7 - 12 grades. During the month of June, 20-25 young high school students spend two weeks at various universities around KY, including the Univ. of KY. They experience dorm life, participate in academic and empowering classes and are provided insight on financial aid opportunities. My part is teaching the STEM portion and I thoroughly enjoy introducing them to the fun of STEM. I provide these young adults with more than just a science class, we tackle real life questions and problems that relate to them, through hands on experiments and field trips. These students, and those that come after them, are going to be the ones that make policy for you and me. They will be our lawyers, doctors, politicians, police officers, construction specialists, nurses, teachers, chefs, artists, etc. I set the bar high for them because I know, without a doubt, they will not only reach it, but will soar beyond it with if given the right tools for their tool chest.
